Wear It: Carried Away Crochet Dress
This spring, a generous family member gifted me with some Athleta items. One of the items didn’t fit well so I trotted on over to my local store to exchange it for something else. Athleta is my favorite place for workout gear…and now for casual gear. I wanted to try a dress since my experience had been limited to yoga tops. Athleta did not disappoint.
I saw this dress on the hanger and knew it was for me. I asked the saleswoman if it was supposed to be a dress or more of a swim cover up. She said the idea is that it can transition from beach cover up to casual dress, and can even be jazzed up a bit with the right shoes and accessories. The fit is great. Snug across the bust, looser but not baggy through the midsection and hip, and long enough for a gal with long legs. One of my issues with buying dresses is that I have broad shoulders, and sometimes getting the fit right in the shoulders means the rest of the dress is too baggy in other places. Not so with this dress.
I bought the dress in Asphalt, which is a rich slate color. It was also available in Watermelon in-store, which is a very bright coral. While pretty and summery, the brightness of the color made me think it wouldn’t be as successful passing as a dress–it seemed much more like something you’d wear only on the beach. They also carry Dove (white) online. Unfortunately, I can’t get the dress to photograph very well. It looks sort of blah and wrinkled. But, in person it’s very attractive. The dress features long sleeves that are partially crocheted, plus a hoodie with crochet detail lining the outside. Two pockets at the bust with button detail, and then two hidden pockets at the waist.
I wore this for the first time this past weekend. I was hanging out around the house but I still wanted to look nice. I paired with blue loafers and a simple necklace. You could also do casual sandals or wedges if you wanted a bit of height. Stay away from a traditional pump, though, it’s too formal for this dress. This dress is going to be a go-to for me this summer. If I’m at home in shorts and a tank and need to run out for errands, or if I have to be out and about after being at the gym, I can slip this on and feel put together. As far as price goes, it’s more than I would have spent had I not had something to exchange for it. I mean, it’s a casual cotton dress for nearly $90. Not a great price point. But as far as use goes? I’ll get more wear out of it than any of the fancy cocktail dresses I own that I only have occasion to wear a couple times a year. The Carried Away Crochet Dress: WEAR IT.
