Favorite roller scents

If you love perfume, you know how expensive it can be, especially designer brands that you get at a department store.  That’s why I love, love, love rollerballs–slim bottles with a rollerball at the open end that dispenses fragrance when you run it across your wrists, neck, or behind your ears.  Prices run between $16-$24, so it’s pretty affordable.   Plus, if you’re like me, you may not want to commit to a whole bottle of a single perfume.  This lets you play around with different scents without breaking the bank or ending up with a huge bottle of unused fragrance.  Below, four picks I love that are available in easy-to-try rollerballs:

Stella by Stella McCartney – $20

Roll me on your wrists. You know you want to.

Described as “a fragrance based on the contrast between the freshness and softness of the rose, and the dark sensuality of amber, Stella is a sophisticated scent focused on an intense sense of femininity.”  I think that’s a good description–it has an almost bitter rose note up front, followed by the warmness of burnt sugar.   It’s a little heavier, so it’s great for evening wear or special occasions, but you could definitely get away with wearing it during the day, too.

Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker – $17.50

Let me nibble at your ears.

Described as “a blend of amber, lavender, orchid, musk, and apple.”  That doesn’t mean much to my ear, so here’s my description.  This is a surprising blend–first you smell baby powder, then musk and a bit of sweetness.  The two scents are so different, it’s jarring at first, but then very pleasant and comforting.  SJP used to make her own scents as a teenager, mixing different perfumes until she got a blend she liked; I’ve heard that she was very involved with developing this scent.

Very Hollywood by Michael Kors – $18

May I be forward? I'd smell great in your decolletage.

Described as having notes of “Black Currant, Neroli, Mandarin.”  What you don’t hear is the silence of everyone on Earth who has no idea what neroli is.  For the laywoman, I’d describe it as having a touch of baby powder, then tones of lily of the valley, rose, and lavender.  It’s very floral, and very heavy.  You wouldn’t want to wear it with a scented lotion or for a casual occasion because it’s going to make itself known.  A lovely scent, but spray sparingly.

Jennifer Aniston by Jennifer Aniston – $18

Overlook my pretension. I smell heavenly.

Described as smelling like “Citrus Grove Accord, Rose Water, Jasmine, Violet, Amazon Lily, Musk, Amber, Sandalwood.”  I seem to recall Ms. Anniston giving really obnoxious interviews when this fragrance came out last…summer?  She waxed poetic about how it smelled like the beach and grass and summer nights.  Why does everyone pretend the beach smells great?  The beach smells like dead jellyfish.  No thanks.  But I have to admit…I like this scent.  It smells, not surprisingly given JA’s reputation as a natural beauty, very clean.  Slightly sweet, like overripe banana, plus lilac.  It’s light, definitely meant for everyday wear.  If you like your scents heavier, you’ll need to layer with the body lotion, or touch up throughout the day.

Have you tried any of these scents?  What do you think of them?  Any rollerball scents left out that you think deserve kudos?
