Nude lip pencils
The nude lip. It’s a way to look polished and beautiful without caking on an outlandishly bright color. Some celeb lovelies who frequently rock a nude lip: Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Aniston (no, you’re not required to change your name to Jennifer in order to paint your lips nude). Wear as part of your daily makeup, or wear in the evening when you’re sporting a dramatic eye. Or, get a good quality nude lip pencil and use it under any shade of colored lipstick. Below, my review of four lip pencils.
Too Faced Perfect Nude Lip Liner – $18.50
My favorite lip liner. Too Faced makes this pencil in a single shade. That’s it. This is a beautiful pinkish, creamy, subtle matte shade. Wear alone. Wear under gloss. Wear under lipstick. It will boost your self-esteem, get you a date, and fix the dishwasher. Well maybe not that last one.
MAC Lip Liner in Dervish – $14
Coming in at second place is this MAC liner in Dervish. It’s a darker pink than your average nude lip tone, but it works really well with a nude or nude-pink lipstick. It also looks great under gloss, but I don’t like it plain. It’s too matte and too intense. It needs the lipstick or gloss to tone it down a bit. I do have very pale skin and fair lips, so if you’re darker-complected or have naturally rosy lips, you may be able to wear it alone.
The L’Oreal liner above is indeed infallible…perhaps to an extreme degree. It seems a little cakey. Application is a bit difficult, too; it doesn’t go on super smooth, so you may get little bumps along the edge of the lip that you’ll have to smooth out. Looks good under a nude lipstick, but because it’s dark and thick, don’t try under other colored lipsticks. If you have dark skin, this might look great on its own, but for the pale to medium-skinned, don’t wear it alone.
Sephora Retractable Waterproof Lip Liner in Naked – $12
As a rule, I haven’t been impressed with Sephora brand products. The quality is not great. This lip liner is no different. Maybe I got this liner in too light a shade, but it made my lips looked chapped. The product didn’t flow smoothly over my lips, and it was so light, it looked like I had skin flaking off my lips. So, definitely don’t wear it alone. It looked similarly flaky under gloss, too. But, I did apply a vibrant red lipstick over it, and the nude didn’t shown through, plus the lipstick stayed pretty well. I still wouldn’t recommend it though, because it can’t multitask. For your money, you’re better off spending a bit more and getting one of the liners above that can be worn both alone and as a primer for lipstick.
