FC Lab Review: bareMinerals Mineral Veil

bareMinerals Mineral Veil – $20

Back to the laboratory!  This week’s review from the Sephora Sun Safety Kit is the bareMinerals Mineral Veil.  This powder–available in completely sheer or tinted–aims to provide sun protection with SPF 25, in addition to dampening shine. Here is bareMineral’s claim:

  • Mineral Veil’s sheer formula infuses skin with softness and light, resulting in airbrushed perfection. It helps eliminate unwanted shine and minimize fine lines and pores, while keeping your complexion fresh all day.

Color me surprised–when I first learned about this product, I had no idea that powder could provide protection against the sun.  (I’d still pair with sunscreen underneath for maximum protection.)

This is a great product.  I think I’m pretty critical of makeup, having worn so much of it, by so many different brands, and this one really stood up.  I tried the sheer, and it is definitely that.  Even when I got a bit too much product on the brush, I was able to simply spread it around the rest of my face without looking like I was wearing clown makeup.  Although it did remove the excess shine from my face, it is not a matte finish, which I really like.  Matte finishes in powders and foundations really dry out my skin, plus the trend in skin appearance the last couple years has been dewy and fresh, not parched as a bone.  The finish is luminous and soft without looking too shiny.

This powder came with what I believe is the Flawless Application Face Brush.  For $22, it’s a little bit of heaven wisping across your face.  Very soft, very light.  The reviews of this particular brush are mixed on Sephora, but I think it’s great.  Another option I spotted is the Mineral Veil Mini Refillable Buffing Brush, regularly $26, on sale for $15.

It appears that one end has room for the Mineral Veil (or any powder, really), and the other end is the brush.  It’s a good deal, though reviews state that the packaging is sort of mess–powder all over the place by the time the brush arrived at their door.  So perhaps this would be a good product to buy in store, if available, where you could be sure it was in good working order.

Final thoughts–the Mineral Veil is a great product, I highly recommend it for sun protection plus a youthful glow, all rolled into one.

I have the mineral veil in the pressed compact and I find it much more difficult to use- it applies very thick and requires a lot of blending. I’d definitely recommend it in the loose form!
